On the eve of the new millennium and the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ, there was a restored unique majestic temple, which for many centuries was the shrine not only of Kiev, but of the entire East Slavic world — the Assumption Cathedral of the Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. As stated in the Kiev-Pechersk Paterike, the Virgin Mary herself led the masters from Constantinople to the Dnieper Routes, where the Pechersky Monastery stood, and ordered the construction of a temple here.

Over the next centuries, this main temple of the Pechersk monastery was repeatedly renovated and rebuilt, and after the terrible fire of 1718, it was rebuilt in the style of Ukrainian baroque. There were twelve iconostases in the cathedral, the largest of which, five-tiered, was presented by the hetman I. Skoropadsky and his wife.

During the Second World War, the third of November 1941, the Assumption Cathedral was destroyed.

The reconstruction of the Assumption Cathedral in the forms of Ukrainian Baroque began in accordance with the decree of the President of Ukraine L. D. Kuchma No. 20/96-rp dated January 27, 1996, and with the order of the Kiev City State Administration No. 870 dated June 12, 1996. The customer was the Directorate for the Protection of Monuments of History, Culture and the Historical Environment of Kiev, the Kiev City State Administration, and the general contractor was the Ukrrestavratsiya Corporation. The project was developed by the specialists of the Institute “Ukrproektrestavratsiya” together with JSC “Kievproekt” (engineering, networks). The immediate reconstruction of the cathedral was started on August 25, 1998 with the release of the order of the Head of the Kyiv City State Administration A.A. Omelchenko number 1754 from 08.25.1998.

The territory where the cathedral was located could be divided into three zones: a zone of complete destruction within the boundaries of the explosion’s epicenter, a zone of significant destruction with remnants of ancient walls and a zone of partial destruction with St. John theological chapel that survived the explosion. The problem of recreating the Assumption Cathedral was that a significant part of the ruins was split into separate elements and deformed. In accordance with the restoration requirements, all remaining ancient structures needed to be preserved and made possible for their further study.

Given the difficult geological conditions (the presence of loess soils under the foundations of the Assumption Cathedral), it was decided to go through the injection of small diameter bored piles through the existing rubble foundations. All specialized domestic firms refused to perform the task due to its great complexity. Only specialists of the corporation “Ukrrestavratsiya” managed to drill the existing massive foundations of the cathedral, arrange bores for injections, without disrupting the unique majestic church, which for centuries was not only Kiev, but also the entire East Slavonic church, which was rebuilt during the akanun of the new millennium and the 2000th anniversary of the Nativity of Christ. World – Assumption Cathedral of Kiev-Pechersk Lavra. As stated in the Kiev-Pechersk Paterike, the Virgin Mary herself led the masters from Constantinople to the Dnieper Routes, where the Pechersky Monastery stood, and ordered the construction of a temple here. Assumption Cathedral was consecrated on the anniversary of the centenary of the introduction of Christianity in Russia.

The complexity of the task of reconstructing the Assumption Cathedral was also in the necessity of preserving the remnants of the ancient Russian walls and including them in joint work with the new clutch. The restorers “sewed” the walls of the existing St. John theological chapel with fittings – cords, which were inserted into horizontal wells, which were drilled into the existing walls. After that, they were pre-tensioned on supports and injected under pressure with a solution. This restoration method was applied by the corporation “Ukrrestavratsiya” at the facilities is not the first time.

In princely times, sixteen years passed between the beginning of the construction of the Assumption Cathedral and its consecration. In our hour, the reconstructed cathedral rose from ruins in two years. On November 21, 1998, the President of Ukraine laid a capsule with a mortgage deed to mark the beginning of the rebuilding of the destroyed Assumption Cathedral.

On October 14, 1999, the first cross was consecrated and erected, and on October 28, 1999, the main cross on the central dome of the revived Assumption Cathedral.

For the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin, August 24, 2000, the Assumption Cathedral was solemnly consecrated.
