St Michael’s Cathedral: design and reproduction of the artistic painting of St Catherine’s side chapel
St Michael’s Golden-Domed Cathedral in Kiev is an outstanding monument of sacred architecture and art. It has become a symbol of spirituality and national identity of the Ukrainian people. An important stage in its history was the design and reproduction of the murals in the process of restoration and reconstruction, particularly in the St Catherine’s side chapel, where outstanding contemporary artists worked.
Designing the reproduction of paintings
The reconstruction of St Michael’s Cathedral, destroyed in the 1930s, began in the 1990s. One of the main tasks was to reproduce the artistic decoration that would be in keeping with historical traditions, while preserving the uniqueness of each element.
To reproduce the paintings of St Catherine’s side chapel, leading Ukrainian artists were engaged, who worked within the framework of the church canon, taking into account the technical and stylistic features of authentic paintings.
The design implied a complex approach:
Research of historical sources and surviving samples of murals.
Development of sketches and colour schemes.
Utilising traditional techniques and modern materials to achieve durability and authenticity.
Artists and their contributions
Sergei Bayandin
His contribution was in the detailing of ornamental compositions, emphasising the grandeur and spiritual depth of the murals. He developed elements harmoniously combining traditional motifs with artistic expression.
Yuri Guzenko
The artist paid attention to the reproduction of biblical scenes with exquisite plasticity of human figures and faces, which creates a sense of divine presence. His works are distinguished by subtle colour perception and composition.
Alexander Syrenko
A well-known master of sacral painting, who concentrated on recreating the Archangelic hierarchy and saints in the central part of the aisle. His works are characterised by deep symbolism and attention to detail.
Yuri Rudko
The artist worked on the figures of saints and ornamental elements, harmonising them with the general composition of the side chapel. His style is characterised by clear lines and refinement of images.
Miroslava Pikul
Contributed greatly to the creation of decorative elements that enliven the walls and emphasise the sacred atmosphere. Her works are distinguished by graceful forms and colouristic harmony.
Konstantin Romanov
His works focus on interior details, particularly the decoration of arches and domes. He skilfully combined ancient Ukrainian traditions with modern artistic approaches.
Other artists
Other artists joined the project, working on icons, ornaments and frescoes. Their collective contribution ensured the integrity and completeness of the artistic design of the side chapel.
Peculiarities of the painting technique
Traditional techniques: KEIM methods were used, which are characteristic of ancient frescoes.
Modern materials: Environmentally friendly paints and protective coatings were used to ensure durability.
Ornaments: The murals harmoniously combine Byzantine motifs with Ukrainian folk elements, which emphasises the uniqueness of the cathedral.
Significance of the artists’ work
The reproduction of the murals of St Catherine’s side chapel was an important stage in the reconstruction of St Michael’s Cathedral. Thanks to the talent and skill of the artists, it was possible to restore the spiritual and aesthetic component of this sanctuary. Each stroke of their brushes filled the space with life, history and faith, preserving the connection between generations.
Today, St Michael’s Cathedral is not only a place of prayer, but also a true work of art, striking in its grandeur and uniqueness.
