Not so long ago, the policy of the Soviet state was aimed at the maximum destruction of many architectural monuments and at the root of the national idea as such. Today the policy of the Ukrainian state has a diametrically opposite orientation and restoration of historical monuments of architecture for this reason is more relevant than ever.

Architectural research of cultural heritage monuments is the basis without which the restoration of any object of historical and cultural value is not possible. Such studies should be carried out by specialists of the relevant profile at the preparatory stage for the preparation of project documentation.

Not every specialist can competently and with a guarantee to perform such work and organisations that represent in the market of services for the restoration of cultural and architectural monuments, must have a license for the survey of monuments (Old Russian) and not only architecture and other permits. Only in this case such works can be carried out within the legal framework and meet all the requirements of the current legislation.

The order and relevance of research

Before starting research on certain architectural monuments, there is always a need to comprehensively investigate the object of restoration in order to preserve its original appearance as much as possible and not to violate the historical or other framework. Today, there are many methods and tools that are used to study and monitor this or that architectural object.

Such studies are carried out primarily to determine, in the end, the methodology of restoration work on a particular object. Surveys of architectural monuments should be carried out exclusively by qualified specialists who are competent not only in the theoretical foundations of restoration, but also have relevant practical experience.

Such work, as a rule, includes several stages, each of which is quite significant:

– carrying out research near;

– drawing up the relevant acts of research;

– investigation of physical and technical properties;

– study of temperature and humidity regime;

– study of hydrogeological conditions;

– conducting research on the development of methods of protection against external or internal factors, and the like.

Methods of research can be different, depending on the nature of the object of restoration. Also the research of architectural monuments of Lviv, Kharkiv, Odessa, Kiev includes bibliographic research, as well as historical and archival research. Only the totality of all these methods can become the basis for the preparation of project documentation, which will be approved and endorsed by the relevant state control authorities. In addition, any organisation that provides restoration services is licensed to survey architectural monuments.
